Seattle Public Schools Policy No. 5630 recognizes the valuable contribution by volunteers. In order to provide students with a safe environment and allow for a variety of opportunities for volunteering, volunteer participation is classified into three categories.

Depending on the category, certain screening processes must be completed by district staff prior to volunteering.

    1. Getting Started:
All schools are asked to designate a school site volunteer coordinator.  All volunteer work must be done under the direction of an assigned teacher, site volunteer coordinator, principal or vice principal.  Volunteers must comply with the district's volunteer screening requirements.

Community members interested in volunteering should:

    1. Contact the school to ask to speak with the volunteer coordinator, School Directory.
    2. Comply with appropriate volunteer screening requirements.
    3. Complete and return a school volunteer application.
    4. Read and acknowledge understanding of the volunteer handbook

All volunteers must complete the online course on Adult Sexual Misconduct Prevention

There are two forms that you need to complete and submit directly to the school or program with which you would like to work. These can be found on the SPS site at the link below, or can be provided by the school.

    • The Volunteer Application offers the school important contact and emergency information as well as some specific details about your interests and experience so the school can find an appropriate role for you.

    • The two-sided Screening Form requests information about criminal background and authorizes Seattle Schools to complete a background check through the Washington Access to Criminal History (WATCH) system.

This is an important step in ensuring the safety of our students.

*Please note: While all volunteers must be screened through the WATCH system, a criminal history does not automatically disqualify one from volunteering in the schools.
